Hinterglemm is the village further up the Glemm valley from Saalbach, in the Austrian province of Salzburg, and a full ski resort in its own right. Its lifts climb both sides of the valley into the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, which the tourist office gives as 270 km of pistes and 70 lifts.

What is Hinterglemm like?

Hinterglemm is the second village of the Glemm valley, or Glemmtal, in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg province. Saalbach sits further down the valley, and the two share a tourist office and the name Saalbach Hinterglemm. The valley's ski bus runs on beyond Hinterglemm to Lengau.

The village has its own lifts on both sides. On one side the 12er KOGEL and 12er Express climb the Zwölferkogel, alongside the Hochalm lifts. On the other, the Reiterkogel lift rises from the village into the Reiterkogel and Hasenauer area. The A9 Unterschwarzach lift, with a floodlit slope and family park, is also in Hinterglemm.

Skiing has a long history here. The tourist office dates the first skis in the valley to 1898, when a teacher had more pairs made and let schoolchildren test them. Saalbach Hinterglemm hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1991.

Hinterglemm suits you if you want to ski a large linked area from lifts in the village, with Saalbach a bus ride or a few lifts away.

Skiing in Hinterglemm

Hinterglemm's skiing is part of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. The Saalbach Hinterglemm tourist office gives it as 270 km of pistes, split into 140 km of blue, 112 km of red and 18 km of black, with 70 lifts and more than 60 ski huts. Skicircus.at redirects to the same tourist office site, so these are the tourist office's figures. For 2026/27 it plans ski operation from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to change.

Hinterglemm ski area

The tourist office's lift list groups Hinterglemm's lifts by zone: B for the Zwölferkogel, C for the Hochalm and D for the Reiterkogel. The A9 Unterschwarzach lift, with its floodlit slope, is also in Hinterglemm.

The tourist office publishes signed circuits. Its Hinterglemm circuit runs from the Bergfried lift over the Zwölferkogel, the Hochalm and the Spieleck, then back across the valley via the Rosswald, Hasenauer and Reiterkogel lifts. Its detail table gives it as about 25 km and 13 lifts, though the same page's introduction says 30 km and about 3.5 hours.

The big one is the Skicircus circuit, also called The Challenge: about 65 km and 32 lifts, through Saalbach, Leogang, Fieberbrunn and Hinterglemm, which the tourist office says takes from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm. Its route passes Hinterglemm's Reiter-Ost, Hasenauer, Spieleck, 12er NORD and Zehner lifts before returning to Saalbach over the Westgipfel.

Hinterglemm piste map

The tourist office publishes the Skicircus piste map and a live lift and piste status page. Use the map to plan a circuit; the status page shows what is open on the day.

Hinterglemm lift pass

Skicircus tickets are sold as the Ski ALPIN CARD, valid on every lift in Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and also at the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun. The tourist office puts the three together at up to 408 km of pistes and 121 lifts. For 2026/27 one-day and multi-day prices fall into three bands: winter start from 27 November to 18 December 2026, peak season from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027, and bonus season from 13 March to 4 April 2027. Prices are on the official ski ticket page, along with the SuperSkiCard and discounts for buying early.

Hinterglemm ski hire

Snow & Fun, at Dorfstraße 204 in Hinterglemm, combines ski hire, servicing, lift passes and a ski school, with a second shop at the Reiterkogel. The tourist office's ski school and rental listings cover the rest of the valley.

Ski schools in Hinterglemm

The tourist office lists 13 ski and snowboard schools across Saalbach Hinterglemm. Two give a Hinterglemm address on their listings. Snow & Fun teaches as well as hiring out equipment. Ski Total Ski & Freeride School, run by Alexander Pfeffer, offers family and private coaching, off-piste coaching, ski guiding and freeriding, with bookings at Intersport Breitfuß and at hotels in the resort.

Where to stay in Hinterglemm

Hinterglemm accommodation is booked through the same platform as Saalbach's. The tourist office's online booking search covers both villages.

For Hinterglemm hotels and apartments, the choice is mostly about which side of the valley you want to be on. The Zwölferkogel and Hochalm lifts are on one side, the Reiterkogel on the other, and the ski bus links the village with Saalbach and Lengau. Check a property's distance to the lift you will use most before booking.

Hinterglemm for families

The tourist office points families to the A9 Unterschwarzach lift in Hinterglemm. Beside an easy blue slope it has the Family Park, the funslopes, a SkiMovie race course and a speed course, and the slope is floodlit in the evenings. The lift data page gives night skiing there on Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 9.30 pm from the end of December. The Zwölferkogel has its own funslopes.

The Skicircus has 140 km of blue pistes, and the tourist office says the ski schools have children's areas and ski kindergartens. Some of the valley's hotels market themselves as family hotels with winter offers built around children.

Off the slopes, the Reiterkogel toboggan run is 3.2 km long and finishes in the centre of Hinterglemm. Take the D1 Reiterkogel lift up; toboggans with brakes can be hired at the valley station. Night tobogganing runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 4.15 pm to 9.30 pm, from the end of December.

Things to do in Hinterglemm

At the end of the valley beyond Hinterglemm, the tree-top trail starts at the Lindlingalm and includes the Alpine Golden Gate Bridge, 200 m long and up to 42 m high, over the source of the Saalach. The tourist office describes it as Europe's highest tree-top trail and says it is open all year. In winter you reach it on foot, or by horse-drawn sleigh.

Back in the village there is the floodlit slope at the A9 Unterschwarzach lift and the Reiterkogel toboggan run. For the full list of winter activities, see the tourist office's winter activities page.

Eating and drinking

The tourist office counts more than 60 huts across the Skicircus. Two above Hinterglemm give their addresses in the village. The Pfefferalm, on the sunny side of the valley, dates from 1717; it sits by piste 70a and the Reiterkogel toboggan run, an easy 15-minute descent from the Reiterkogel lift, and serves Pinzgau dishes and Austrian home cooking all day. The 12er Treff is reached on the 12er KOGEL lift and serves snacks and drinks. Check the tourist office's winter huts list for opening times and the rest of the huts.

Hinterglemm in summer

Hinterglemm in summer runs on the JOKER CARD, which partner accommodation gives guests on arrival. The 2026 season runs from 22 May to 26 October. It covers unlimited rides on the summer cable cars in Saalbach Hinterglemm, including the Westgipfel, 12er KOGEL and Hochalm lifts in Hinterglemm, plus two rides a day in Leogang. It also covers the end-of-the-valley train and the adventure golf course and indoor and outdoor tennis courts in Hinterglemm, and up to 10 guided hikes a week.

JOKER CARD holders get 20% off bike tickets bought at lift cash desks in Saalbach Hinterglemm. See the JOKER CARD page for the current season.

How to get to Hinterglemm

By air, the tourist office lists Salzburg and Munich as the airports most visitors use, with Innsbruck also among the nearest. The Saalbach Airport Shuttle runs pre-booked transfers from Salzburg and Munich airports to your accommodation.

From Salzburg to Hinterglemm by public transport, take the train to Zell am See, then bus line 680, which runs from Zell am See through Saalbach and Hinterglemm to Lengau. Taxis wait outside Zell am See station. WESTbahn also runs direct trains from Vienna to Maishofen-Saalbach. Guests staying anywhere in Salzburg province get the Guest Mobility Ticket at check-in, valid on all public transport in the province; register with your accommodation in advance to use it on the journey in.

In winter the ski bus is free with a valid lift ticket, daily from 8.30 am to 5 pm, every 20 to 30 minutes between Lengau, Hinterglemm, Saalbach, Jausern and Viehhofen.

Weather, snow and webcams

The tourist office runs live cameras across the Skicircus, a weather page and a live lift and piste status page. Check them on the morning you ski.

When to visit Hinterglemm

The Skicircus plans to open for 2026/27 on 27 November 2026 and close on 4 April 2027, subject to change. Ticket prices fall into three bands: winter start to 18 December, peak season from 19 December to 12 March, and bonus season from 13 March. From mid-January a group of lifts including the 12er KOGEL, 12er Express, Hochalm lift, Hochalm 6-seater, Reiterkogel lift and Hasenauer 8-seater start at 8 am. The tourist office runs a family Easter offer from 20 March to 4 April 2027.

In summer, the JOKER CARD season and the summer lifts ran from 22 May to 26 October in 2026.

Hinterglemm vs Saalbach

Saalbach sits further down the valley from Hinterglemm. Both are in the same ski area, on the same lift pass, and joined by the free ski bus. The Skicircus circuit starts at Saalbach's Schattberg X-press and passes through Hinterglemm's lifts.

Hinterglemm has its own lift bases on both sides of the valley, the floodlit slope at the A9 Unterschwarzach and the Reiterkogel toboggan run. Saalbach has the Schattberg and Kohlmais lifts and the Spielberg toboggan run, reached by piste basher. Neither needs a car once you arrive.

Choose Hinterglemm if you want the Zwölferkogel, Hochalm and Reiterkogel on your doorstep.

Choose Saalbach if you want to start from the Schattberg and Kohlmais side of the Skicircus.
