The White Guide
About

A guide to the mountains, written by people who go there

The White Guide covers the mountains of France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy: where to go, where to stay, what to do, where to eat and when to travel. It is editorial rather than algorithmic, and deliberately selective.

We recommend, we don't rank

There are no scores here, and no star ratings. A list of the ten best anything, ordered by a number nobody can explain, is not useful. We say what we think is worth knowing about and why.

Researched, sourced, dated

Researched from official tourist offices, lift companies and transport operators. Every guide lists its sources and the date we last checked it.

A short list, properly written

We would rather cover forty places well than four hundred badly. If somewhere is missing, it is usually because we have not spent enough time there to be useful about it yet.

Every season, not just January

Most mountain writing stops when the snow melts. The same valleys are frequently better in June, and considerably cheaper. We cover the whole year.

Independence, stated plainly

In time this site will carry affiliate links, and they will be labelled wherever they appear. No business can pay to be recommended, and no commercial arrangement changes what we write.
