Cervinia is the Italian half of the Matterhorn ski area. The village, called Breuil-Cervinia by the regional tourist board, sits at about 2,000 m at the top of the Valtournenche valley, under the Matterhorn. Its runs and lifts connect with Zermatt in Switzerland, and the lift company publishes an interactive piste map for the whole area.
What is Cervinia like?
Cervinia is a resort at the foot of the Matterhorn, on the Italian side of the mountain. The Aosta Valley tourist board calls it Breuil-Cervinia, gives the altitude as 2,000 m, and describes the village as set in a wide hollow at the top of the Valtournenche valley. It was set up in the first decades of the last century.
The tourist board describes the resort's ski area as among the widest in the Alps, and it counts the Italian and Swiss runs together.
Skiing in Cervinia
The lift company calls the linked area Cervino Ski Paradise. Its own listing names Breuil-Cervinia, Valtournenche, Chamois, Torgnon and Zermatt as the places it covers.

The ski area
The tourist board gives 150 km of slopes on the Italian side, and 360 km of runs in total once the Zermatt side is counted. The lift company's live lift and slope counters showed nothing open when its pages were checked for this guide, so no lift count is given here. Check the lifts page for what is open on the day.
Piste map
The lift company's Skirama page offers a downloadable PDF map of the slopes and ski lifts. Use it to find the runs and lifts on the Italian side.
Crossing to Zermatt
The tourist board describes the Italian and Zermatt slopes as linked. Matterhorn Ski Paradise, the Zermatt side's own website, sets out the crossing: on foot from Zermatt to Cervinia, and by ski from Cervinia to Zermatt. Its page gives no last-connection times, so confirm those before you plan the crossing.
Ski schools
The tourist board says beginners can find instructors for every level in the resort's ski schools. Ask the schools directly for their prices and meeting points.
Cervinia in summer
Cervinia keeps some skiing going in summer. The tourist board says summer skiing is possible on the Plateau Rosà and the Ventina glacier, in the higher part of the resort. It puts the summer slopes linked with Switzerland at about 25 km.
Some of the ski facilities are open to walkers and mountain bikers in summer. The tourist board describes a range of hikes, a walk round Lago Blu, where the Matterhorn is reflected in the water, and about 90 km of enduro and downhill mountain-bike tracks.
How to get to Cervinia
Turin is the nearest airport, about 1 hour 42 minutes by car. The usual public transport route is the train or bus to Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, then the bus up to Breuil-Cervinia. Drive times and the current rail works are covered in the getting-there guide.

The tourist office is at Via Circonvallazione 2, 11021 Breuil-Cervinia. Its phone number is (+39) 0166 949136 and its email is [email protected]. Opening hours change through the year, so check them before you visit.

Weather, snow and webcams
The lift company's webcams show the slopes and the village, and its weather page gives the forecast. The lifts page shows which lifts are open. These pages are live, so this guide gives no figures.
